Black Mountain ~ Dec 11, 2012

Journal entry by Lenore Reber

I had forgotten what a wonderful, watery woods covers Black Mountain. Liz and I were happy to start hiking on this cool and partly sunny day after being detoured because of the Route 4 rock slide. The gurgling and bubbling streams replaced bird song except for the deep warning of a pair of ravens. The summit was still, the blades of the windmill barely turning. We saw no signs of snow in the hazy distance. A few icy patches and great views of the narrows of Lake George made the steep descent slow going, but we soon came to the undulating trail passing Black Mountain Ponds, crossing many little streams and along Millman Pond. A pair of downies flitted along the trail and we were soon walking down the gravel road, happy we had spent time visiting among the hemlock groves and water of Black Mountain.
