Peebles Island Paddle ~ Jul 25, 2012

Journal entry by Claire

Five Canes and one prospective Cane ventured downstream from Lock One to Waterford on Wednesday. It turns out that we made the right decision to avoid today's storm threat. After successfully navigating Champlain Lock One ( a Canes first),we headed for Campbell Island to check out a huge eagle's nest. Just when we had given up hope of seeing any eagles, Diane spotted one landing and then another one, maybe its mate? I definitely need new glasses!!

We then proceeded 5 miles downstream with a NNW 10 mph tailwind to Waterford where tugboats, yachts and the restored 1614 Dutch schooner the On Rust welcomed us. After checking out the visitor's center and making sure everyone had lunch (thank you Jim) we were ready to relaunch and explore the waters around Peebles Island where the Hudson and Mohawk converge. There were lots of turtles sunning themselves and blue heron cohabiting in this now urban scene. Tom was able to fulfill his dream to paddle beneath the waterfall where the two rivers meet. Thank you Tom, Sam, Diane, Jim and Bill (future Cane) for joining me to lead my first Canes paddling trip. It was fun.
