Journal entry by Lenore Reber

Tom, Lynn, and Lenore entered the magical forest off Shelving Rock Road after locating Tom's missing mittens on top of his car. We assume a wood sprite was the culprit. We microspiked up and down snowy hills and across frozen streams, enjoying the patterns of dark trunks and bright snow. The we realized the sprite was ahead of us, tossing tiny, rainbow hued crystals onto the snow. They took our breath away. As we entered the broad opening of the notch which leads to the summit, a herd of snow-topped elephants, still as boulders, greeted us. We wended our way steadily up, skirting ice flows, aiming for the blazing blue sky glimpsed through the slot. Brilliant sun and whirling wind welcomed us as we reached the summit and gazed on the patterns of ice and water on Lake George. After noting snow-trailed Gore and snowy-peaked Marcy, we scurried to a wind-free lunch spot in the slot and soaked up the sun. After lunch a little exploring led us to a good overlook of the Green Mountains. We headed down the slot, enjoying frequent fanny slides down the icy sections and noting sled tracks on the trail, probably made by our wood sprite. Saying good-bye to this warm, lovely and magical woods, we headed back to the 'real'? world.
