Pilot Knob Preserve and waterfalls ~ Feb 23, 2012

Journal entry by Fran Herve

Again this winter I hoped until just a few days before our scheduled XC ski trip that we would get a good snow storm. With a forecast of temperatures in the 40s and morning showers, Don and I decided on an old favorite: the Pilot Knob Preserve and waterfalls. The mild temperatures had melted most of the snow and there was not enough ice present to really need to wear our microspikes but the walk was challenging with some steep inclines. The trail through a beautiful forest took us to a parcel that had been illegally cleared and where the house that was built disrupted the unbroken wilderness of the Pilot Knob range. The property was subsequently confiscated by authorities, the house torn down and with the help of hundreds of donors the land was acquired by the Lake George Land Conservancy. From the gazebo we admired views of Lake George and after a short break we continued to the waterfalls. We crossed the frozen stream and enjoyed our lunch and conversation sitting on a log. After completing the loop we returned to the gazebo where we delighted in more sunshine and walked down the road that used to be the driveway where we caught some shortcuts back to the trail and down to the parking lot. Thank you Don, Peter, Diane, Karen, Dave, Ken, Claire, Kirk, Lynn and Jim for a fun day in the woods and for the extra leaders help!
