Schumann Preserve, Pilot Knob ~ Mar 22, 2016

Journal entry by Lenore and Jack Reber for Don and Tom

Eight Crooked Cane hikers met at the parking lot of the Schumann Preserve, a parcel of the Lake George Land Conservancy near Buck Mountain. We began the climb to the gazebo under sunny skies and 40 degree temperatures. While heading up the newer orange trail, we heard calls from Nancy Kimball, who was racing to join us. Nine hikers rested at the gazebo and admired the view of Lake George and near and distant mountains.

We began the second phase of our journey by passing the illegal former home site, then more uphill toward the waterfall. Again, we defied tradition and hiked to the top of the falls first. Ice formations  adorned the stream crossing and upper falls. We bushwhacked further upstream for a closer look at more ice formations and a clear, green-bottomed pool under the upper cascade.

At last, we descended to the bottom of the falls and had lunch. There were more unusual ice formations to enhance our dining experience. More uphills awaited us as we climbed up from the stream valley back to the gazebo for another rest.

The trail back to the cars was quite rocky with some ice patches, but we made it without mishap. A stop at Stewarts for Mint Marcy ice cream and other flavors topped a beautiful day. Thanks to Tom and Don for organizing this Tuesday event, and Margie, Nancy, Karen, Linda, Jim, Lenore and Jack for their companionship.

If you like ice formations, take this hike to see many fantastic ones before they melt.
