A-Team, Old Gick Farm + Fox (farm?) microspike walk ~ Jan 5, 2017

Journal entry by Don McMahon

What a difference a day makes - yesterday warm with soft snow - today cold with hard snow and ice! Microspikes were perfect for the open woods and fields traversed.  We (Jim, Jane, Nancy, Linda, Denis, Tom and Don) started from the parking lot of Rt. 50 and made a loop in the morning on the west side of Rt. 50 using the trails on the Old Gick Farm which is on the other or east side of the railroad tracks from the better known "Wilton Preserve" alias "Camp Saratoga."  The trails wandered over hill and dale in fields or with open fields often in view. The signs indicated that lupine flowers were to be cultivated in the fields to rescue blue butterflies (sorry, don't remember more!) from extinction. After about an hour we arrived back at the cars and had lunch sheltered from the cold and wind on warm car seats - good change for January weather. After lunch we walked trails on the east side of Rt. 50, labeled "Fox" on the map - no idea if Fox was a person's name or Fox were seen in the vicinity. However the trails were more in the woods, again over hill and dale, to a far point at Ruggles Rd. Then we returned most of the way via a logging road, taking a short side trip on more northerly trails, arriving back at the cars about 1:30 pm. All in all, a good day with the sun making us feel warm and comfortable in spite of cool breezes.

Forgot to mention that Kirk joined us mid-morning and walked with us for the rest of the day's event. He arrived at the Wilton Preserve parking lot a few minutes after I left for the Rt. 50 trailhead. And, he managed to find us and we're so glad he did!
