Bear Slide Brook A-Team Hike ~ Dec 1, 2016

Journal entry by Don McMahon

As people should know it is really Buttemilk Brook that includes the "Bear Slide" as one of its features. We (Tom, Linda, Bob, Denis, and Don) started at a side road that leads to a camping area (Tom's memory was better than mine!) that started out going east well south of the Brook but then turned north toward the brook, arriving there just below the Bear Slide. At this point Denis, attempting to take a photo of Bear Slide, slipped on a rock and dropped his IPhone into the brook. To retrieve the IPhone Denis remained standing in the brook, searching with his hands in 1 foot deep water, until he eventually found his Iphone 10 minutes later. During the groping process Tom and Bob went back down the access road to get Bob's car (the gate miraculously was actually open so that this was possible!) to "rescue" Denis. However, after drying off the camera, Denis replaced his wet socks with a dry pair that he had brought (better prepared than most of us!) and was ready to continue on. So we walking another half mile up along the brook along the slide and viewing the many pretty cataracts until we got to where the brook flattened out. The original plan of crossing the brook and returning via the trail on the north side was not feasible due to the large amount of water flowing in the brook. We then returned to the car and "rode" back down to the Hudson River where we had lunch. At lunch we decided to convert the day to a ride in Bob's warm car to visit Rockwell Falls and the Double Bow Bridge over the Sacandaga. Then the day became notably colder with drizzle and our enthusiasm for more outside activity waned. But we enjoyed the better part of the day!
