Journal entry by Fran Herve

With temperatures in the high 90's it became obvious that the Fort Edward bike ride should be cancelled. The ideal activity would have to be near or in the water. We are so lucky to be close to rivers and lakes! We only had to go as far as Moreau Lake State Park for a meeting point and we drove to the Spier Falls dam put-in. We leisurely paddled to the International Paper Co. dam and tried to stay in the shade of the trees along the river.

We were delighted to spot two eagles along the way. Canada geese were also present. Tom had promised us cardinal flowers all along the river banks but we were only able to spot one. They are probably just beginning to bloom and I expect to see more next time.

A nice little cove awaited us for lunch. Right after the last bite some of us jumped into the water for a refreshing swim while the others found that the water was still too cold. After paddling about 4-5 miles we returned the same way we came and had enough time for another swim before reloading our boats on our cars. This was the perfect way to stay cool!

Two eagle sightings in one month! It might become a request for all our future water outings! Thank you Tom, Don, Claudia, Irv, Dianne, Claire and Gretchen for such a fun day and especially thank you Tom for suggesting it. It was Gretchen's first outing with the Crooked Canes and we welcomed her into the group. If anyone has any photos to add, please do (I do not like to bring my camera on the water).
